Expect widespread schedule changes for financial markets, mail delivery, government offices, and retailers in the days surrounding Christmas.

Christmas Day falls on Thursday, Dec. 25, with Christmas Eve bringing a flurry of last-minute shopping and deliveries. With the holiday rush underway, it’s worth knowing what will be open, closed, or operating on reduced hours. Here’s a quick breakdown.

christmas

Financial markets

U.S. stock markets — including the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq — will close early at 1 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, Dec. 24, and remain closed on Thursday, Dec. 25. Bond markets will shut at 2 p.m. on Dec. 24 and also stay closed on Christmas Day. All markets resume normal trading on Friday, Dec. 26.

Mail and delivery services

The U.S. Postal Service will deliver mail and keep post offices open on Dec. 24, though hours may vary by location. There will be no regular mail delivery on Dec. 25, except for Priority Mail Express, and post offices will be closed.

UPS will operate on a normal schedule on Dec. 24 but will limit services on Dec. 25, with only UPS Express Critical available. UPS Store locations may be closed on Christmas Day.

FedEx will run modified services on Dec. 24 and suspend most operations on Dec. 25, except for FedEx Custom Critical. FedEx Office locations will have reduced hours on Christmas Eve and close on Christmas Day.

Banks

Banks are generally closed on Dec. 25. Digital banking and ATMs will remain available, though transaction posting may be delayed. Some branches may be open on Dec. 24 with shortened hours, so checking locally is recommended.

Government offices

Christmas Day is a federal holiday, meaning nonessential federal offices will be closed. This year, a presidential executive order also mandates the closure of federal agencies on Dec. 24 and Dec. 26. State offices set their own schedules, so closures may vary by location.

Retail stores

Most retailers and grocery stores will be open on Dec. 24, though many will close early. On Dec. 25, the majority of major retailers — including Costco, Walmart, and Target — will be closed, while online shopping remains available. Some pharmacies may stay open with limited hours.

Before heading out, it’s best to confirm hours with your local branch, office, or store to avoid surprises during the holiday stretch.
