What’s Closed on Juneteenth, June 19, in Observance of the Federal Holiday
As Americans commemorate Juneteenth—a day marking the end of slavery in the U.S.—several institutions will be closed in observance of the federal holiday.
Juneteenth celebrates June 19, 1865, the day federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans—more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
Though long celebrated in Black communities, Juneteenth became a Texas state holiday in 1980 and was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, when President Joe Biden signed it into law, calling it “a day of profound weight and power.”
